For the International coaching Federation (ICF) Mentor Coaching consists of coaching and feedback in a collaborative, appreciative and dialogued process based on an observed or recorded coaching session to increase the coach’s capability in coaching, in alignment with the ICF Core Competencies
Mentor Coaching should take place over an extended time (three-month minimum) in a cycle that allows for listening and feedback from the Mentor Coach while also allowing reflection and practice on the part of the individual being mentored.

Having the opportunity to observe the coaching conversation through the feedback of an experienced mentor coach helps to gain a higher level of awareness. It makes it possible to identify:
Challenges as well as strengths;
Response to clients’ different communication styles and emotions;
Habits that make coaching less effective;
And much more.
The majority of coaches, whether they have gone through the ICF credential process or not, have received at least one cycle of mentor coaching and can confirm it is an extraordinary enriching experience. Through time, listening to oneself gets easier, shaping an evidence-based approach becomes possible and achievable.
Because it is a process focused on capability and competence, the benefits are above all for the clients, both individuals and organizations.
Being an effective coach means being able to guarantee constant and continuous positive impact, therefore mentor-coaching should be available to all coaches. In reality, the necessary investment is too high to make it an ordinary expense in a coach’s budget, especially at the beginning of a new career. Coaches learn mostly through peers exchange, workshops and, above all, through personal experience. Reaching high coaching standards requires a long time.
